Apr 2008 High-Quality Preoperative CT Scans Help Reduce Unnecessary Appendix Surgery
Drs. Steven Raman and colleagues Ferdnand Osuagwu, Barbara Kadell and David Lu of the UCLA Radiology Abdominal Imaging Division reported in the February 28th issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, the results of a study suggesting that the increased use of high-quality preoperative CT has led to significantly improved clinical outcomes in adults, with a dramatic and sustained decrease in the rate of false positive diagnosis of appendicitis and also a decrease in rates of appendiceal perforation.
Feb 2008 Dual Energy CT Angiography Enhances Diagnostic Capabilities
Dual Source CT is not only an excellent diagnostic tool which improves patient care by making cardiovascular imaging available to even the most critically ill patients, but is also an interesting imaging modality to discover completely new clinical applications. The dual energy imaging with facilitated bone and plaque removal significantly improves diagnostic confidence of CT angiographic imaging of the entire vascular territory. This technique is particularly helpful in patients with advanced atherosclerosis, when conventional CT angiograms are difficult to interpret.

The Interventional Radiology section is pleased to announce a team effort in treating patients with superficial venous disease. Our physicians, nurses and technologists have been performing sclerotherapy, ambulatory phlebectomy, microphlebectomy and laser therapy of diseased veins at both the UCLA Westwood and UCLA Santa Monica Campuses.
Sept 2007 ER OF THE FUTURE: Nethercutt Emergency Center
The opening of the new Emergency Department (ED) at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopedic Hospital heralds a new era of medical imaging for the emergency patients in the westside community. The new ED is equipped with state-of-the art direct digital and computed radiography equipments to facilitate excellence in routine radiographic examinations. The ED has a new multidetector CT scanner that supports a broad range of advanced imaging protocols that previously were in the exclusive domain of outpatient imaging centers.

The Vocada Veriphy system is The Joint Commission (TJC) approved reporting system for critical values in a radiology environment. Vocada will allow radiology to provide critical results reporting of abnormal findings 24/7. Using this new database technology the UCLA Healthcare Enterprise will join the ranks of leading institutions in providing State of the Art critical reporting and documentation of that reporting. We are excited to phase this system into our process at UCLA. Look forward to a phased implementation beginning with the Santa Monica Emergency Department, Santa Monica Inpatient / outpatient services starting from June 18th, 2007. UCLA Medical Plaza 200 facility has installed the first Dual Source computed tomography (CT) scanner, SOMATOM Definition, on the West Coast. It is the World's first Dual Source CT, using two X-ray sources and two detector arrays at the same time.
