MERCI Story
UCLA interventional neuroradiology team invented a revolutionary device to save lives and limit disability of ischemic stroke victims. The device, known as the Concentric MERCI Retrieval System, was developed by Concentric Medical, Inc. of Mountain View, California. Two UCLA inventors, Drs. Y. Pierre Gobin and J.P. Wensel, were involved in the design. In August 2004, MERCI retriever became the first medical device cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to remove blood clots from the brain in patients experiencing an ischemic stroke. On January 26th, 2009, Concentric Medical announced that MERCI Retrieval System(TM) has been used in over 10,000 patients ever since its launch in 2004.

The new center is set to provide a comprehensive imaging solution that will prove to be a perfect fit for the South Bay community. CT COLONOGRAPHY: A Noninvasive Colorectal Cancer Screening Option
Computerized tomographic colonography (CTC), also known as virtual colonoscopy, can be adopted into clinical practice as another screening option for colorectal cancer - the nation's second-leading cause of cancer death. The National CT Colonography Trial, results of which were published in the September 18 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine demonstrated that CTC is highly accurate for the detection of intermediate and large polyps, which are the ones more likely to develop into cancer.

2008 RSNA R&E Foundation Grant Recipients: Dr. Edward W. Lee and Dr. Nam C. Yu
UCLA Radiology is pleased to announce that Dr. Edward Lee and Dr. Nam Yu have been selected to receive the 2008 RSNA Research & Education Foundation's Resident Grant. Dr. Edward W. Lee, MD, PhD, under the mentorship of Dr. Stephen Kee, MD in Interventional Radiology from UCLA Medical Center, will study the novel tumor ablation method called irreversible electroporation (IRE, aka NanoKnife) on head and neck tumors using a VX2 tumor model. Dr. Yu, under the mentorship of Professor David S. K. Lu, MD of the Abdominal Imaging section, will study the biological alterations in tumors treated by image-guided therapies.

Dr. Daniel Ennis Awarded UCLA Laubisch Cardiovascular Research Grant 2008
Dr. Daniel Ennis from the Diagnostic Cardiovascular Imaging (DCVI) Section has been awarded a UCLA Laubisch Cardiovascular Research Grant for 2008. A collaborative team comprised of Drs. Paul Finn (DCVI), Alan Garfinkel (Medicine and Physiological Science), and Michael Fishbein (Medicine and Pathology) will use diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DTMRI) to examine the microstructural organization of healthy adult human hearts.

Dr. Tateshima and Dr. Vinuela Awarded 2008 Brain Aneurysm Foundation Grant Drs. Satoshi Tateshima and Fernando Vinuela from the division of interventional neuroradiology have been awarded the 2008 Brain Aneurysm Foundation Grant for Basic Science and Translational Research Project. Dr. Boechat Boechat was Elected President of the SPR. Ines Boechat, MD, FACR, Professor of Radiology and Pediatrics and Chief of Pediatric Imaging at the Geffen School of Medicine, was elected President of the Society for Pediatric Radiology for the year 2008. The SPR is an organization with 1400 members, dedicated to being a leader in advancing pediatric health care through medical imaging and image-related therapy. Dr. Boechat is the second University of California faculty to receive such a distinction. |

High-Quality Preoperative CT Scans Help Reduce Unnecessary Appendix Surgery Drs. Steven Raman and colleagues Ferdnand Osuagwu, Barbara Kadell and David Lu of the UCLA Radiology Abdominal Imaging Division reported in the February 28th issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, the results of a study suggesting that the increased use of high-quality preoperative CT has led to significantly improved clinical outcomes in adults, with a dramatic and sustained decrease in the rate of false positive diagnosis of appendicitis and also a decrease in rates of appendiceal perforation. |

Dr. Gonzalez and Dr. Vinuela received 2008 Stein Oppenheimer Endowment Award UCLA Radiology is pleased to announce that Drs. Nestor Gonzalez and Fernando Vinuela from the Interventional Neuroradiology Division have been selected to receive the 2008 Stein Oppenheimer Endowment Award, a private grant from "Ijane inc." The awarded proposal of endovascular stroke model will allow for a more accurate simulation of human stroke conditions, utilizing minimally invasive techniques. Scientists and clinicians will benefit from a new model that can be used for molecular studies and new therapy testing. This model will produce a stroke with specifically controlled ischemia time and lesion volume, which will be suitable for imaging and intervention studies and provide sufficient cortex for multiple molecular experiments. Such model may become a fundamental tool for the development of new therapeutic interventions for cerebrovascular disease. |

Dual Energy CT Angiography Enhances Diagnostic Capabilities Dual Source CT is not only an excellent diagnostic tool which improves patient care by making cardiovascular imaging available to even the most critically ill patients, but is also an interesting imaging modality to discover completely new clinical applications. The dual energy imaging with facilitated bone and plaque removal significantly improves diagnostic confidence of CT angiographic imaging of the entire vascular territory. This technique is particularly helpful in patients with advanced atherosclerosis, when conventional CT angiograms are difficult to interpret. |

Dr. Wells received his medical degree from Creighton University School of Medicine, Nebraska, in 1976. After a one-year internship, he completed two residency: his Orthopedic Surgery residency in the University of Nebraska, in Omaha Nebraska, in 1978, and his residency in Diagnostic Radiology in the University of California, Davis, in 1983. He continued his training in Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland Oregon and completed one-year fellowship in Body Computed Tomography and Ultrasound in 1984. In the year of 2003, he completed his fellowship in Magnetic Resonance Imaging in RadNet Management in Los Angeles, California. |

UCLA MRI Core Lab Awarded a 2.6 Million Dollar Grant A 2.6 million dollar grant has been awarded to the UCLA Radiology MRI Core Lab to service the multi-center DETERMINE trial. DETERMINE (DEfibrillators To REduce Risk by MagnetIc ResoNance Imaging Evaluation) seeks to define which patients with ischemic heart failure will benefit from treatment with implantable cardiac defibrillators (ICD), based on Magnetic Resonance Imaging criteria. The trial is sponsored by St. Jude Medical, and is administered by Northwestern University, under the direction of Alan Kadish, MD. |

Dr. Ferdnand Osuagwu receives the Jo-Ann D'Amato Award of Excellence. UCLA Radiology is pleased to announce that Dr. Ferdnand Osuagwu has been chosen as this year's recipient of American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN) Jo-Ann D'Amato Award of Excellence. The presentation of the award will be made at the ACRIN Fall Meeting on Friday, September 28th, 2007 during the awards luncheon. Dr. Osuagwu received his bachelor of medicine, bachelor of surgery (MB.B.S. equivalent of MD) from the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria in 1997. He is currently working on two ACRIN Multicenter trials, (National CT Colonography Trial (ACRIN 6664) and Multicenter feasibility study of percutaneous radiofrequency ablation of hepatocellular carcinoma in cirrhotic patients (ACRIN 6673) in the Cross Sectional Interventional and Abdominal Radiology research team. His efforts and that of the other members of the team have ensured that UCLA radiology maintained a leading role in both trials in the west coast and nationwide, thus this special recognition from ACRIN. |

The MRI workshop focused on the central nervous system and the musculoskeletal system. As one of the two luminary speakers, Dr. Seeger presented six talks on the musculoskeletal system. |

Coronary CTA Visiting Fellowship Course The two-day course on Cardiac CTA is designed to cover all aspects of Cardiac CTA. In this course all aspects of Coronary CT Angiography, including patient selection, data acquisition techniques and post processing are covered. The course will be a combination of didactic lectures, which address the fundamentals of Cardiac CTA and its clinical application. The live cases will be performed and post processed at the time of acquisition. In addition the attendees will have the opportunity to review the extensive collection of cases already acquired in the Department teaching file. This will be done in the company of the Faculty members present that day. The objective of the course is to set the groundwork for level one readership and to become familiar with the basics of Cardiac CTA. |
